TECHNOLOGY & DESIGN

As well as the application of the design process, creative thinking techniques, I have an excellent understanding and ability to apply relevant Design Elements and Principles to a visual design. The elements and principles of design are integral to the design process and, when applied effectively lead to harmonious and successful design products. They are the fundamental tools applied in the creation and production of all design and it is important to build a solid understanding of their application, significance and influence.

When teaching my students on the elements and principles of design, I highlight that although having an understanding of the elements, Color, Form, Line, Shape, Space, Texture, Tone, Point, it is more important on how you use them together.

The theory of how you put the elements together is your principles of design. I quite often show students bad examples of 2D designs that have used many elements, but failed at using the design principles; balance, symmetry, asymmetry, radial, pattern, contrast, proximity, harmony/unity, alignment, repetition, hierarchy, proportion, scale.
